OUGD603 / Moving Image / Food Waste Video / Plan

We made a list of what we want to include in the video and then made a rough plan for the video.

OUGD603 / Moving Image / Food Waste Video / The Real Junk Food Project

We have been in touch with the Real Junk Food Project to collaborate with them:

The Real Junk Food Project:
'We are a global, organic network of pay as you feel cafes. We divert food destined for waste and use it to create delicious and healthy meals.'
'The Real Junk Food Project is a collaborative effort between catering professionals and activists to bring about a radical change in our food system. Our first step to achieve this challenging task is to intercept perfectly edible food that would otherwise not make it to plate and serve it as meals in the café or distribute it through our food boutique. As well as the positive environmental impacts of reducing edible food waste the project also has clear social benefits through operating a strictly Pay-as-you-feel (PAYF) policy . PAYF offers an alternative to the conventional the payment system as there is no price on any produce of the café. Our system transcends monetary transactions and liberates people to use their skills and attributes as well as money to pay for their meals. Furthermore, we aim to highlight the absurdity that the produce we use has been stripped of its monetary value but still retains its nutritional value. By making people think about what they wish to contribute for their meals, the idea is to get society thinking about how they value food as a resource.'

They have said they'd be interested in taking part which would mean we are promoting the project as well as potentially using some of their food for the video.

Making the video for them would also give us a platform for our voice to be heard.

We want to communicate ways to preserve food in a fun, engaging way. So far we have thought of: stale bread can crushed up and made in to breadcrumbs, old bananas can be used for banana bread.

FEEDBACK:

- If you want the business to be environmentally friendly how will you show that through the design?
- The yellow and red colours work best together
- Having the word 'shit' in the name makes it unappetizing
- You could expand this on to social media - larger and wider platforms

RESPONSE:

- I am going to research into environmentally friendly / sustainable packaging.
- I am going to keep the word 'shit' as I think the humour works well with the audience I am targeting.
- I will try and make the brand extend onto social platforms to reach a wider audience.

OUGD603 / Moving Image / Food Waste Video / Research

We have decided to change this brief slightly, instead of doing a video to music we wanted to create something with more of a purpose - to spread the message of food wastage and how to preserve your food.

This is a big issue and as a group we are all very conscious of food wastage.

WAYS TO PRESERVE FOOD:
  • Mature, slightly underripe produce is optimal for canning and pickling.
  • Ripe produce is best for fresh eating, drying, and freezing.
  • Overripe produce is suitable for cooking and freezing; cook fruit as jam or sauce, and vegetables as soup or stew.
  • Put moldy or decaying produce in the composter or worm bin!
Sugaring: Sugaring is used to preserve fruits like apples, apricots and plums in sugary syrup that dehydrates the foods. The skin of certain fruits are cooked in sugar till they crystallize and then they are stored in a dry environment.

Drying: This is one of the oldest methods of food preservation. This process acts by reducing the moisture content in the food which in turn arrests bacterial growth. Drying is largely used for preserving meat. However, fruits and vegetables can also be preserved by this method. The additional advantage of drying is that it reduces the size and weight of the food product, therefore making it more portable. Sun drying, oven drying, and drying with the help of a dehydrator are the various ways used to reduce the water content of food.

Pickling: Cucumber, beef, peppers and some vegetables may be preserved by pickling. This technique involves dipping the food in some liquid chemical that prevents the growth of micro-organisms but still maintains edibility of the food. The preserving liquids used are vinegar, brine, alcohol and some other oils. This process is known as chemical pickling. The other way of pickling is by fermentation. In fermentation pickling, the preservation agent is produced by the food itself during the process of fermentation.

Benefits of reducing food wastage:
  • Saves money from buying less food.
  • Reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers your carbon footprint.
  • Conserves energy and resources, preventing pollution involved in the growing, manufacturing, transporting, and selling food (not to mention hauling the food waste and then landfilling it).
  • Supports your community by providing donated untouched food that would have otherwise gone to waste to those who might not have a steady food supply.

OUGD603 / LUPE'S Cantina Rebrand / Research

- These are photo's of hand-painted signs for restaurants in Mexico.
- We want to take inspiration from these to keep the identity authentic to its culture.

OUGD603 / LUPE'S Cantina Rebrand / Brief

Brief: To re-brand Lupe's Cantina (a restaurant on Cardigan Road that serves authentic Mexican food). The photography on the website is good and reflects the standard of the food well however we thought the menu and logo struggled to do this.

We want to re-brand the identity of Lupe's to reflect the quality and authenticity of the restaurants food.

Target Audience: Students as it's located in a very student based area, as well as people after affordable, quality Mexican food.

Things to create:

- Logo
- Menu
- Website
- Aprons
- Beer mats
- Social Media Advertising

OUGD603 / Food Stall Branding / More Experiments & Development

- Trying out different compositions / colour ways.

OUGD603 / Food Stall Branding / Experiments

- I stated off by using a a simple sans serif typeface and distorting it on Illustrator.

- I then discovered the typeface Hobo, this type communicates the playfulness I want to get across in the designs.
